Yoga & Meditation
Yoga
Often misunderstood to be merely physical postures & breathing exercises, is an integrated philosophy of life. The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root word 'yuj' meaning union. At the very basic level it means the bringing together of the physical, mental and spiritual facets in one harmonious experience. Even at the most basic level when the simplest postures are done regularly it promotes health and beauty at all levels. On a physical level it helps keep the body supple, flexible and youthful which shows on the skin in its enhanced radiance, increases energy levels, tones the muscles, which reflects in the increased vitality and zest for life. Meditation
Mediation at the very least is the calming of the body and the mind and connecting with oneself. Beyond the physical benefits, the meditative aspects bring about a calm, relaxed and happy demeanor making you feel at peace with yourself and the world. Meditation also helps increase concentration, reduce stress and increase efficiency. Scientific evidence carried out across the world has proven the extraordinary benefits at both the physical and psychological levels of meditation. It has been shown to alleviate many kinds of physical ailments and improve quality of life, all of which is reflected in enhancing natural beauty and personality.
Simple Meditation
One of the simplest forms of meditation is 'Breath Awareness' described in steps below which can be easily practised by anyone.
- Sit comfortably cross-legged on a cushion on the floor with back straight but not stiff.
- Slowly concentrate on each part of the body starting from head to toe consciously relaxing each part. Make sure that the entire body is relaxed and all muscles tension-free.
- Close your mouth and breathe normally through the nose. Just watch each breath as you inhale and exhale. Don't try to regulate the breathing at all let it happen naturally, simply watch it as a witness.
- Gradually the breathing will start becoming gentler and steadier on its own. Do not try to do it consciously at all, simply watch the natural rhythm as it happens on its own, but be very watchful and aware.
- If you find your mind wandering to different thoughts do not worry, that is the minds' nature, keep bringing it back gently each time, if it helps count the breath, 'one' in, 'one' out, 'two' in 'two' out, or if you prefer focus on the tip of the nostril where the air touches it.
- Practice everyday, if possible morning and evening, start with doing it as long as it is comfortable and slowly increase the duration to 15 minutes and then 30 minutes, but only as long as it is comfortable. Meditation is neither instant, nor a feat of endurance, so do not try to achieve anything. The key is consistency, over a period of time the benefits will start occurring on their own.
This is one of the easiest forms of meditation, as you go along you may want to explore and experiment further. One thing is sure a stress-free, calm, peaceful and exhilarated state will exude a lustrous & radiant beauty.
